MS Team Building Day

The SJK middle school went on a magical journey to the Kingdom of Norval located in the middle of Georgetown, close to Toronto on October 19th, 2009.

I was riding on the bus and the sun was shining on my face like the color of the vehicle, not bright red or yellow, but orange. When I stepped on the lushes green grass and took a great big breathe of fresh air I knew I was in the right place, a place called Norval. When we first arrived to this gorgeous outdoor education center we were assigned into groups. My group was filled with leaders, which was great. We did many other different games before we started our day filled with excitement. I was surely not ready to get back on that boiling, orange colored bus.

Our first challenge was called "Kings Finger" and our task was to get a tire off a log. Boy was this task challenging. This activity was just like taking a ring off somebody’s finger. Once my friend Wilks was trying on a ring and it got stuck on her finger, so she had to go to the hospital to get it removed. Anyways, we tried many different ideas like making a pyramid or climbing the log, but our only solution was to get someone on somebody’s shoulders. I unfortunately didn't get to be the one on top, however I was part of the team prepared to catch them if they fell. We finally got the tire off the log and it took everybody working as a team to succeed. This was my awesome experience with “Kings Finger”.

Our second activity was to try and get everyone to the end of all the wires without touching the ground. Wire by wire we tried to cross to the finish, helping each other out. My group had lots of trouble with this because we needed to be patient and communicate effectively. This is what our group didn’t have. I was also a bit discouraged because I never got a chance to participate as I just spotted people. In the future I will make sure to take my place and standup. Just like when my mother tells me “don’t let people step in your way, you have to be vocal and get involved.”

Professional drummers welcomed us. Loud booms and bangs squawked in my ear. We had the opportunity to get involved by hitting drums to the beat. They told us to hit the drums from quiet to loud. Wow this was fun! We were taught different beats and tunes. I took a glance at my hands and I can’t even describe how red they were. The drumming finally ended and I could hear ringing in my ears from all those different sounds. Sadly, I had to go take a seat on that stinky old orange bus again. This was my experience with drummers.

My eyes started to water as I saw the sight of Norval disappear before my eyes. The day went by way too fast for it to end. I hope to return in the future and try more activities. Overall my impression of the Norval Outdoor Education Center was excellent. I cleared my eyes and thought about how next years trip will be and maybe it will be an even better experience.

  1. Outstanding work Emilie. I love that you took a simple topic (perhaps boring for some) and turned it into an exciting adventure - all with words! That is no easy task. Nice work and PLEASE keep it up!
